Old Mill-Town Floors, Done Right
Epoxy flooring in Bonner-West Riverside often begins with concrete repair. Bonner grew up around a sawmill that started cutting lumber on June 6, 1886, on the Blackfoot River just above where it meets the Clark Fork. The mill ran for 122 years under several owners and closed in 2008. The town itself stayed company property until it was sold to private owners in 2007. Many of the homes and outbuildings here have been in use for a long time, and their floors show it.
A short history of the mill
- 1886: The Blackfoot Milling Company starts up and soon averages 55,000 board feet a day.
- 1889: Output reaches 24 million board feet, and the mill is called the largest between Wisconsin and the West Coast.
- 1898: The Anaconda Company buys it.
- 1972: It passes to US Plywood-Champion Papers.
- 1993: Stimson Lumber Company takes over.
- 2008: The mill closes.
That is more than a century of working families, and a lot of them kept their own tools, trucks and projects at home.
What older slabs need
Garage and basement floors from earlier decades usually need work before they can be coated. Typical items on a Bonner quote: 1. Grinding off old paint, mastic or sealer 2. Routing and filling cracks so they do not show through the coating 3. Patching spalled spots at the door, where freezing water has broken the surface 4. Rebuilding chipped control joints 5. Leveling low areas where water used to pool
We walk the floor with you, mark what needs repair and price it line by line. Sometimes the repair work costs more than the coating. You will know that before we start.
Snow loads are real here
In 2011, heavy snow collapsed much of the old mill's roof. That tells you something about winters at the mouth of the Blackfoot. Snow that heavy means a lot of melt in a garage over the season. A sealed, textured floor handles it better than bare concrete, and a sloped floor with a clear path to the door lets the water out instead of letting it sit.
River towns and cleanup
Two dams once stood here. Bonner Dam held logs for the mill, and Milltown Dam, finished in 1908, trapped silt carrying heavy metals and arsenic after a big flood that same year. Both were removed as part of a Superfund cleanup, Bonner Dam in 2005 and Milltown Dam in 2008, and Milltown State Park opened in 2018. We take that history seriously on our own jobs. Grinding dust is vacuumed and bagged, and rinse water and leftover coating stay out of yard drains and the river.

Bonner-West Riverside Questions
My Bonner garage floor is cracked and flaking. Can it still be coated?
In most cases, yes. We grind it, fill the cracks, patch the flaked areas and then coat. If part of the slab is heaving or broken through, we will tell you it needs concrete work first.
Can you coat an old shop floor with years of oil on it?
Usually. We degrease, grind and test whether oil is still coming up out of the concrete. Badly soaked spots may need extra cleaning or cutting out before coating, and we price that separately.
