Room to Spread Out, Floors to Match
Epoxy flooring in Carlton often means more than one building. Carlton covers about 6.18 square miles with 721 residents, which works out to roughly 117 people per square mile. That is open, acreage country. Many properties here have a house garage plus a shop, pole barn or equipment shed, and each slab has a different job.
Matching the coating to the building
We start by asking what each floor actually does. The answer decides the system.
- Shop floors: jacks, stands, welding spatter, dropped tools and spilled oil or hydraulic fluid. These get our Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy, with a thicker build and a tough topcoat.
- Pole barns and equipment sheds: tractors, mowers, ATVs and trailers rolling in with mud and gravel. We often suggest a broadcast flake or a heavy solid coat with grit for footing.
- House garages: daily vehicles and household storage. Garage Floor Coating with a flake finish is the common choice.
- Tack rooms and workrooms: smaller slabs where a bright, easy-clean surface helps. A solid-color epoxy works well.
Old fluids and slab prep
A shop floor that has seen years of oil changes is the hardest kind of slab to coat. Oil works deep into concrete. If it is not dealt with, it pushes back up and breaks the bond. We degrease, grind and test those areas, and sometimes grind deeper or treat them more than once. If a stain will not clean out enough to hold a coating, we tell you before we start. We also fill cracks and rebuild broken joints with Concrete Crack & Floor Repair so equipment wheels roll smoothly.
Floors with drains
We grind and coat right up to the drain body and seal the edge, so water runs into the drain instead of under the coating. If a slab does not slope toward its drain, we point that out at the estimate.
Between the highway and the river
Carlton sits on the north end of the Bitterroot Valley. US 93 runs through it, Missoula is about 17 miles north and Hamilton about 30 miles south. The Bitterroot River forms the community's eastern edge, and Carlton Creek flows through the middle before joining Sin-tin-tin-em-ska Creek on its way to the river. Ground near creeks and rivers can carry more moisture, and that matters for slabs on grade. We test any slab that will be coated, and we pay close attention to outbuildings that were poured without a vapor barrier. If moisture readings are high, we choose a primer built for it or tell you the floor is not a good candidate.
Wash bays and mud rooms
On rural properties, one corner of a shop often becomes a wash bay for equipment, dogs or muddy gear. Water and grit are hard on bare concrete. For those areas we recommend a broadcast system with a textured topcoat and coved edges where the floor meets the wall, so water does not sit at the base of the framing. A coated wash area is easier to squeegee toward a door or drain and dries faster.
Doing big floors efficiently
Large rural slabs take planning. We need power for the grinder and vacuum, a clear path for equipment, and a place to stage what comes out of the building. On a big shop, we can split the work into sections so you keep part of the space in use. Tell us the dimensions when you call (406) 412-3732, and send photos if you can. We will set a time to see it in person and give you a written, itemized quote.

Carlton Questions
Can you coat a pole barn floor that was poured years ago?
Usually. We grind it, check for moisture and oil, and repair cracks first. Older outbuilding slabs were sometimes poured without a vapor barrier, so the moisture test matters. If readings are too high, we will say so before you commit.
Will a coating hold up to a tractor?
A heavy shop system handles rolling equipment well. Steel cleats, dragged implements and dropped attachments can still chip any coating, so we talk through how the floor is used and build the system thick enough for it.
Do you quote each building separately?
Yes. A house garage and a shop have different prep and coating needs, so we itemize each slab. You can do one now and the other later.
